THE SCAM:
A man-in-the-middle (MITM) scam involves a cybercriminal intercepting communication between two parties, such as a customer and a legitimate service provider, to steal sensitive information or manipulate transactions.
In this attack, the scammer positions themselves secretly between the victim and the intended recipient, often through unsecured Wi-Fi networks, phishing emails, or malicious software.
Once in place, they can monitor, alter, or steal data such as login credentials, financial details, or personal information.
THE CASE:
Our client, a business owner, reached out to a machinery supplier to purchase equipment for their company's expansion.
After receiving an invoice via email, the client made the payment as instructed.
However, when they followed up on the order a few days later, the supplier denied any knowledge of the transaction.
Upon investigation, it was discovered that the banking details on the invoice had been altered, and there was an unusual delay between the supplier sending the email and the client receiving it.
This delay was the result of a sophisticated man-in-the-middle scam.
Hackers had compromised the supplier's email servers, intercepting outgoing emails to manipulate invoice details.
They replaced the legitimate banking information with fraudulent details and then resent the tampered email to the client.
Through meticulous cyber-forensic work, including tracking the scammer's online activity and analysing digital evidence, we identified the breach's entry point and traced the altered data's routing path.
The associated bank account was frozen during the investigation, preventing further loss.
Our investigation led to the identification of the perpetrator, Mr. Peter Ramasodi, a 41-year-old individual linked to the scam.
As a result, SSS successfully recovered R241,977.12 for our client.
A case was opened with the South African Police Service (SAPS), and an arrest warrant is being issued.
THE PERPETRATOR:
PETER RAMASODI
SSS continues to collaborate with law enforcement to ensure Mr. Ramasodi is brought to justice.
