It is extremely important for an athlete to remain in a positive frame of mind during a competition – even more so when participating in the Olympics – which is the pinnacle of most athletes’ careers. Cybercriminals know this and use their underhanded anonymity to threaten and throw the athlete of balance mentally.
This is what happened to Mr. Jovan van Vuuren who was representing South Africa in the recent Olympic games in Paris. Mr. van Vuuren received a text message via WhatsApp messenger that was designed to threaten him and destabilize his mental focus.

The text message contained:
Insults on his character.
Threats of sexual assault on close family members.
Accusations pertaining to past deaths in his inner friend circle.
Personal attacks on his masculinity.
Mr. Jovan van Vuuren was certain that the message was intended for him as his name was mentioned in the message twice, the content of the message also indicated that the person was familiar with Mr. van Vuuren on a personal level, as he had knowledge of events from Mr. van Vuuren’s past.
The incident attracked the attention of international media due to the popularity of the Olympic event.

Mr. van Vuuren’s coach, Mr. Neil Cornelius contacted Mr. Bolhuis from Paris and requested an investigation into the identity of the person responsible for sending the message, they also requested that Mr. Bolhuis provide security to Mr. van Vuuren’s family members who were in South Africa at the time.
Specialised Security Services immediately intervened and provided physical and Cyber protection to Mr. van Vuuren, his team in Paris and his family in South Africa.
With the threat identified and evaluated, Mr. Bolhuis proceeded to inform the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee of the investigation.
THE INVESTIGATION:
The Specialised Security Services Cybercrimes Unit launched a forensic investigation into the contents of the message, and the phone number from which the message had been sent.
A forensic profiling investigation revealed the following:
The person responsible for sending the message had intimate knowledge of Mr. van Vuuren’s past.
The person responsible for sending the message is an Afrikaans speaking male.
The person has knowledge of the procedures and processes that occur during athletic competitions.
Through a sophisticated forensic investigation, Specialised Security Services was able to successfully link a suspect directly to the message that was sent to Mr. van Vuuren, the suspect revealed by the forensic investigation matches the results obtained by the forensic profiling of the message.
On his return to South Africa, Mr. van Vuuren registered a criminal case with the South African Police Service in Lyttelton Pretoria with Case number CAS 1/8/2024
Specialised Security Services is working closely in support of the official SAPS investigation.
The investigation is ongoing and is currently at a very sensitive stage.
NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC
Cybercrime has increased over the past few years to the point where it has become the most prominent and dangerous type of crime in the world.
The Cybercrimes act has recently been amended to allow for the prosecution of individuals who use digital communications to extort, intimidate, threaten, defame, or harass others on digital platforms.
Hiding your identity behind a fake profile or an unknown email or phone number does not:
hide your identity,
exempt you from the law,
or mean that you cannot be identified and prosecuted.
Always communicate in a lawful and respectful manner when engaging with others on online digital platforms. Actions have consequences, and the statements you make online have a far-reaching impact on someone's life and their circumstances.
THE INVESTIGATION INTO THIS MATTER IS ONGOING.
