PROJECT: WHATSAPP SCAMMERS EXPLOIT JOB SEEKERS

YOU MAY SHARE THIS PUBLIC DOCUMENT

The scourge of fraudulent practices on WhatsApp, preying on job seekers, is exacerbating the already high unemployment rates in South Africa, especially among the youth.

This issue demands immediate and decisive action to protect citizens from falling victim to these deceptive schemes.

SCAMMERS POSE AS REPUTABLE COMPANIES:

• There is a dishonourable trend where scammers pretend to be reputable companies such as Takealot, Amazon, and others in South Africa.

• They are using the names of well-known companies without authorisation; this causes confusion and leads to fraudulent activities.

• It is important to be aware of such scams and be cautious while dealing with any suspicious emails, messages, or phone calls.

SCAMMERS TARGET PERSONAL INFORMATION:

• The scammers' tactics involve coaxing victims into divulging sensitive information such as ID numbers, addresses, credit card details, and birth dates.

• This information becomes a tool for various activities, from compromising account security to identifying passwords for online transactions.

PROTECTING PERSONAL INFORMATION:

• We highlight the need to safeguard personal information on all messaging platforms.

• Be extremely cautious when sharing critical details like credit card information or passwords.

• Never share such information with unknown numbers pretending to be a bank or SARS.

• Banks continuously warn their customers that asking for bank account details or passwords is never their practice.

• Be aware of the risk associated with leaving a phone unattended.

SAFEGUARDING AGAINST FRAUDULENT MESSAGES:

Unexpected Messages:

  • Exercise caution with messages promising lucrative job opportunities you weren't expecting.

Unknown Sender:

  • Be wary of messages from unfamiliar numbers or email addresses.

Avoid Clicking Links:

  • Refrain from clicking on links in unsolicited messages to prevent potential exposure to malicious websites.

Too Good to Be True:

  • Approach job offers with suspicion, especially if they seem too good to be true.

Requests for Money or Personal Details:

  • Be cautious if a message asks for money or personal details through sending your CV.

Poorly written messages:

  • Pay attention to language and spelling errors, as poorly written content may indicate fraudulent communication.

It is essential to remain vigilant and aware of new scamming methods in the new year.

Stay alert to potential pitfalls that could compromise your personal information and financial well-being.
