PROJECT: WARNING - UNIVERSITY ADMISSIONS SCAM TARGETING DESPERATE STUDENTS

PLEASE SHARE THIS PUBLIC DOCUMENT

Specialised Security Services issues an urgent warning to students and parents about a concerning scam

preying on those desperate to gain admission to universities.

THE SCAM EXPLAINED:

  • Scammers create online groups or forums claiming to assist students with university applications, registrations, and admissions.

  • They establish credibility by offering free updates on application deadlines and university processes, gradually gaining the trust of their victims.

  • As time progresses, they introduce a "premium service" requiring students to pay fees for guaranteed admission.

  • Initially, the fees are moderate but gradually increase.

  • Victims are pressured into making cash transactions, often through untraceable methods like Cash Send or vouchers, under the pretence of avoiding detection.

  • Once payment is made, scammers either fabricate fake admission letters or simply disappear, blocking the victims from further contact.

  • When students attempt to verify their admission with the university, they discover that no application was ever submitted on their behalf.

REAL CASE STUDY:

  • A victim recently shared their story, detailing how they paid a scammer who promised guaranteed admission but later disappeared.

  • The scammer insisted on choosing the university and program, ignored previous applications, and blocked communication once the victim requested portal access.

  • Only after contacting the university directly did the victim realise they had never been admitted.

HOW TO AVOID THIS SCAM:

  • NEVER PAY UPFRONT FEES FOR ADMISSIONS:

    • Universities do not charge money to process applications beyond the official application and registration fees.

    • Always verify payment requests with the university directly.

  • ALWAYS USE OFFICIAL UNIVERSITY CHANNELS:

    • Always apply through the university's official website or verified third-party portals listed on their official pages.

  • VERIFY ADMISSION LETTERS:

    • If you receive an acceptance letter, contact the university admissions office to confirm its legitimacy before making any further payments.

  • AVOID UNTRACEABLE PAYOUT METHODS:

    • Scammers prefer Cash Send, e-wallets, or prepaid vouchers because they are harder to trace.

    • Always use bank transfers to official university accounts.

  • BE WARY OF SOCIAL MEDIA AND WHATSAPP GROUPS:

    • While these can provide helpful information, they should never be relied upon for official university applications.

  • TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS:

    • If an offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Be sceptical of anyone promising guaranteed university admission in exchange for money.

  • REPORT SUSPECTED SCAMS:

    • If you believe you have encountered a scam, report it to the university, the police, and fraud prevention organisations.

Education is a vital step toward a successful future, and scammers exploit this by preying on your ambitions.

Always remain vigilant, conduct thorough research, and never make financial commitments

without official confirmation from the university.

If you suspect you have been a victim of this scam, we encourage you to report it to Specialised Security Services immediately. SSS has a specialist team committed to fighting fraud and ensuring justice for those affected.
