PROJECT: WARNING - NEW ACCIDENT SCAM TARGETING DRIVERS IN SOUTH AFRICA

YOU MAY SHARE THIS PUBLIC DOCUMENT

Reports have emerged concerning a new scam in South Africa where individuals orchestrate accidents to fraudulently claim compensation from the Road Accident Fund (RAF). In this scheme, perpetrators, often pedestrians, deliberately position themselves in front of slow-moving vehicles to feign injury and secure payouts.

The RAF has issued a stern warning regarding this trend, stating that they will not compensate anyone who intentionally causes an accident, even if injured. They are actively investigating fraudulent claims and have rejected thousands in recent months.

To protect yourself from falling victim to this scam, drivers should exercise heightened vigilance, particularly in areas with high pedestrian traffic. Maintain a safe following distance and be prepared to react swiftly if an individual unexpectedly enters your path. If you suspect an accident is staged, refrain from admitting fault or offering compensation. Instead, contact the police to report the incident. This scam is prevalent in busy urban areas and along heavily trafficked roads,

but awareness is crucial regardless of location.

If you find yourself involved in an accident that you suspect might be staged, remain calm and take the following actions:

  • ENSURE SAFETY:

    • Prioritise your safety and that of others.

    • If anyone is injured, call for emergency medical assistance immediately.

  • AVOID ADMITTING FAULT:

    • Do not admit fault or offer compensation, as this may be used against you later.

  • GATHER EVIDENCE:

    • Document the scene with photos and videos, capturing any injuries, vehicle damage, and the surrounding area.

    • Note the time, date, and location of the

      incident.

  • COLLECT WITNESS INFORMATION:

    • If there are witnesses, gather their names, contact details, and statements regarding what they observed.

  • REPORT TO POLICE:

    • Provide all collected information to the police, including any suspicions about the accident being staged.

  • NOTIFY YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY:

    • Inform your insurer about the accident and provide them with the details of the police report.

  • LIMIT DISCUSSIONS:

    • Only discuss the incident with the police, insurance company, and lawyer (if applicable).

If you find yourself involved in a staged accident where someone is feigning an injury, it is crucial to remain calm and handle the situation carefully. Avoid admitting fault or making any payments on the spot, as this could be exploited against you. Document the scene thoroughly by taking photographs, gathering witness information, and recording any suspicious behaviour. Report the incident to the police immediately, ensuring an official record is created,

and notify your insurance provider about the potential fraud.

Staged accidents are a serious issue, but by staying vigilant, following proper procedures, and seeking legal guidance, if necessary, you can protect yourself from becoming a victim of this deceptive scheme.
