PROJECT: WARNING - NEVER SHARE YOUR ONE-TIME PASSWORD (OTP)

YOU MAY SHARE THIS PUBLIC DOCUMENT

Criminals are becoming more sophisticated in their scams, and one of the most common tricks they use is to convince you to share your One-Time Password (OTP). Vulnerable people, such as children and older people, must especially be wary, never to share their OTP under any circumstances. If someone asks for it, do not trust them easily; they are trying to steal from you.

DEFINITION:

  • An OTP is a security code sent to your phone or email when you make a payment, log in to your bank account, or approve a transaction.

  • It is designed to keep your money safe by ensuring only you can complete these actions.

BANKS WILL NEVER ASK FOR YOUR OTP:

  • No bank will ever call, email, or message you asking for your OTP.

  • If you receive such a request, it is a scam.

  • The person on the other end of the line may sound professional, friendly, and urgent, but he or she is a criminal trying to trick you.

MODUS OPERANDI:

  • Fraudsters often pretend to be from your bank and tell you that:

    • Your account has a suspicious transaction, and they need your OTP to stop it.

    • Your account needs to be verified, and the OTP is required for security reasons.

    • You have won a prize, and the OTP is needed to claim it.

  • These are all lies.

  • The moment you share your OTP, the criminal can steal money from your account, and in many cases, banks will not refund the loss because the transaction was approved with your OTP.

PROTECTING YOURSELF:

  • Never share your OTP with anyone, even if they claim to be from the bank or police.

  • If you receive an unexpected call about your account, hang up and call your bank directly.

  • Be cautious of urgent requests. Scammers use pressure tactics to make you panic.

  • Do not click on suspicious links in emails or messages that claim to be from your bank.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE SHARED YOUR OTP:

  • If you accidentally give your OTP to someone, act immediately:

    • Contact your bank and report the fraud. Ask them to freeze your account if necessary.

    • Report the scam to Specialised Security Services and to the South African Fraud Prevention Service.

    • If money has been stolen, open a case with SAPS and obtain a case number.

Fraudsters prey on trust and fear. By refusing to share your OTP and warning others about these scams,

you can protect yourself and your loved ones from financial loss.

If you or someone you know has fallen victim to a banking scam, contact Specialised Security Services for assistance.

We are here to help keep you safe.
