The vehicle recovery scam in South Africa targets car theft or hijacking victims.
Scammers look out for mentions of stolen vehicles on social media or purchase details of such losses on the dark web.
They then contact the victim of the theft, claiming to have recovered the vehicle.
MODUS OPERANDI:
CONTACT:
Scammers contact the victim, claiming to be from the SAPS or a vehicle tracking company.
They state that the stolen vehicle has been recovered.
FEE DEMAND:
The scammers then demand a fee for various reasons, such as:
"Release fee" to get the vehicle back from the pound.
"Towing fee" to transport the vehicle to the nearest pound.
"Processing fee" for administrative costs.
PAYMENT METHODS:
Scammers often request payment through e-wallets, bank transfers, or other methods that are difficult to trace.
NO RECOVERY:
After the victim pays the fee, they discover that their vehicle has not been recovered and they have lost their money.
HOW TO AVOID A VEHICLE RECOVERY SCAM:
BE SCEPTICAL:
Never trust unsolicited calls or messages claiming to be from the SAPS or a vehicle tracking company about your stolen vehicle.
VERIFY INFORMATION:
If you receive such a call, independently verify the information by contacting the SAPS through official channels.
NEVER PAY UPFRONT:
The SAPS does not charge any fees for recovering a stolen vehicle.
Never pay any money before confirming the legitimacy of the recovery.
REPORT SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY:
If you suspect a scam, immediately report it to the SAPS.
By being vigilant and following these guidelines, you can protect yourself from falling victim to this vehicle recovery scam.
Do not pay anything, as the legitimate SAPS members will NEVER demand cash in exchange for their service.
Numerous warnings have been issued by the SAPS, too:
If you are still hesitant about whether your car has been recovered or not,
contact Mr. Mike Bolhuis for a thorough investigation and confirmation.
