Although the dark web was not designed for criminal activities,
it has become a hotspot for illicit operations owing to its anonymity and encrypted nature. Initially developed to enable secure and private communication, particularly for government agencies, journalists, and individuals living under oppressive regimes, the dark web provides a concealed space where illegal transactions and cybercrimes flourish.
The dark web, which is a hidden part of the internet that requires special software to access,
is associated with various types of criminal activities.
From drug trafficking and identity theft to hacking services and financial fraud, the dark web harbours a wide range
of unlawful activities and poses serious risks to individuals and organisations alike.
It is crucial to understand how these crimes operate to protect oneself from potential threats and
to ensure cybersecurity in an increasingly digital world.
A LABYRINTH OF CRIMES:
ILLICIT DRUG TRADE:
The dark web hosts numerous illegal marketplaces where drugs such as narcotics, prescription medications, and synthetic substances are sold anonymously.
Popular dark web marketplaces, such as the now-defunct Silk Road, facilitated large-scale drug trafficking.
Examples:
Sales of cocaine, heroin, fentanyl, and methamphetamine.
Counterfeit prescription medications like opioids and steroids.
WEAPONS AND EXPLOSIVES TRAFFICKING:
Illegal firearms, ammunition, and even explosives are sold on the dark web.
Buyers and sellers use cryptocurrency to avoid law enforcement from tracking them.
Examples:
Unlicensed firearms such as assault rifles and handguns.
Homemade explosives and military-grade weapons.
IDENTITY THEFT AND FRAUD:
Stolen personal information, such as credit card details, social security numbers, and login credentials, are frequently sold on the dark web.
Criminals use this data for financial fraud and identity theft.
Examples:
Selling hacked bank accounts, passports, and fake IDs.
"Fullz" packages, which include complete personal information for financial fraud.
CYBERCRIME SERVICES:
The dark web offers various services for cybercriminals, including hacking services, malware, ransomware, and Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks for hire.
Examples:
Sale of hacking tools (e.g., keyloggers, spyware, and Trojans).
Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS), where criminals rent ransomware to extort victims.
Hiring hackers to break into corporate systems or social media accounts.
HUMAN TRAFFICKING AND EXPLOITATION:
Some dark web marketplaces facilitate human trafficking, including illegal labour, sex trafficking, and child exploitation.
Examples:
Sale of forged work visas and fake passports.
Illegal adoption or trafficking of individuals across borders.
COUNTERFEIT GOODS AND CURRENCY:
The dark web is a significant marketplace for counterfeit products, including fake currency, luxury goods, and counterfeit documents such as passports and driver's licenses.
Examples:
Counterfeit U.S. dollars, Euros, and other major currencies.
Fake designer clothing, electronics, and cosmetics.
HITMEN FOR HIRE:
Although many "hitman" services on the dark web are scams, some genuine illegal networks claim to offer contract killing and other violent services.
Examples:
Alleged assassination services targeting individuals for a fee.
Assault or intimidation services.
DATA BREACHES AND CORPORATE ESPIONAGE:
Stolen corporate data, including trade secrets, customer databases, and proprietary software, are sold or leaked on the dark web.
Examples:
Leaked customer information from major corporations.
Sale of proprietary source code and confidential business plans.
CHILD EXPLOITATION MATERIAL:
One of the most disturbing aspects of the dark web is the circulation of child pornography and exploitation materials, which law enforcement agencies worldwide actively try to combat.
Examples:
Illegal forums and marketplaces trading in explicit content.
Grooming and exploitation networks.
SCAMS AND FINANCIAL FRAUD:
The dark web is full of scams targeting unsuspecting users, and these include Ponzi schemes, phishing kits, and advance-fee fraud schemes.
Examples:
Fake investment opportunities.
Phishing services that mimic legitimate websites to steal credentials.
ORGAN TRAFFICKING:
In extreme cases, there are reports of organ trafficking on the dark web, where organs are allegedly sold illegally for transplantation purposes.
Examples:
Sale of kidneys, livers, and other human organs for black-market medical procedures.
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES:
AVOID ACCESSING THE DARK WEB AT ALL COSTS:
Stay away from the dark web - you have no legitimate reason to use it.
Many websites on the dark web are designed to scam visitors, steal personal information, or spread malware.
STRENGTHEN YOUR ONLINE SECURITY:
Use strong, unique passwords for all your accounts to prevent hackers from gaining access.
Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on your email, social media, and banking apps for extra security.
Keep your devices updated with the latest security patches and antivirus software.
BE EXTREMELY CAUTIOUS WITH PERSONAL INFORMATION:
Never share personal details like your home address, phone number, or financial information online.
Avoid clicking on suspicious links, especially from unknown senders, via email, SMS, or WhatsApp.
Be wary of online offers that seem too good to be true, as they may lead to scams.
ALWAYS SECURE YOUR FINANCIAL DATA:
Use secure and reputable banking apps instead of entering card details on unfamiliar websites.
Check your bank statements regularly for unauthorised transactions.
Consider using virtual or prepaid cards for online purchases to limit exposure.
STAY AWAY FROM ILLEGAL MARKETPLACES:
The dark web hosts marketplaces for illegal drugs, stolen credit cards, fake IDs, and weapons.
Buying from these sites is unlawful and dangerous.
Law enforcement agencies monitor these platforms, and transactions will expose you to legal trouble or scams.
BE CAREFUL WITH PUBLIC WI-FI:
Avoid accessing banking or sensitive accounts using public Wi-Fi, as hackers can steal your data.
Use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to encrypt your connection and protect your privacy.
WATCH OUT FOR PHISHING SCAMS:
Cybercriminals often send fake emails, messages, or phone calls pretending to be from trusted organisations.
Never click on unknown links or download files from unverified sources.
If in doubt, contact the organisation directly through official channels.
EDUCATE YOURSELF AND STAY INFORMED:
Cybercriminals are always finding new ways to trick people. Stay updated on common scams and online threats.
Follow cybersecurity experts, government advisories, and trusted news sources for the latest updates.

REPORT SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY:
If you suspect your data has been leaked or you’ve been a victim of fraud, report it to:
Specialised Security Services.
South African Police Service (SAPS) Cybercrime Unit.
Your bank or financial institution (for fraudulent transactions).
The South African Fraud Prevention Service (SAFPS) for identity theft concerns.
If you are not a cybercrime expert, the safest approach is to avoid the dark web entirely.
Navigating it without essential knowledge will expose you to hackers, scams, malware, and legal risks.
Many dark websites are designed to steal personal information,
distribute harmful software or lure unsuspecting users into illegal transactions. Prevention is always better than cure -
by steering clear of the dark web, strengthening your online security, and staying informed about cyber threats,
you will protect yourself from potential dangers before they happen.
