PROJECT: THE DANGERS OF QR CODE SCAMS / QRUISHING

YOU MAY SHARE THIS PUBLIC DOCUMENT

"QRishing" or "QR code phishing" is also known as quishing. This involves scammers using QR codes to trick individuals into providing sensitive information or downloading malicious content.

QR codes are a part of daily life for many, as seen on posters, flyers, or restaurant menus. They can be a handy way to quickly access websites, discounts, or information.

Quishing might sound like a strange word, but it is a serious issue. Scammers create fake QR codes that, when scanned, lead you to malicious websites or prompt you to share personal information.

These fraudulent codes can be placed anywhere, from advertisements to stickers and seemingly legitimate flyers.

Quishing typically involves creating fake QR codes that, when

scanned by a mobile device, lead users to malicious websites or

prompt them to perform actions that compromise their security.

DANGERS OF QUISHING:

• Malicious Websites:

  • Scammers may redirect users to websites designed to steal personal information, such as login credentials or financial details.

• Malware Downloads:

  • QR codes can be used to trigger downloads of malware onto the user’s device.

• Social Engineering:

  • Users might be tricked into providing sensitive information under the guise of a legitimate request.

SAFETY MEASURES AGAINST QUISHING:

• Verify the Source:

  • Only scan QR codes from trusted sources.

  • Be cautious when scanning codes received via email, messaging apps, or from unknown websites.

  • Before scanning any QR code, take a moment to consider if it seems legitimate.

  • If it looks suspicious or you are unsure about its source, it is better to avoid scanning it.

• Use QR Code Scanners with Security Features:

  • Choose QR code scanners that provide security features, such as URL preview or safety indicators.

• Use a QR scanner with built-in security:

  • Download a reputable QR code scanner app that includes security features.

  • Some apps can detect malicious codes and alert you before opening harmful websites.

• Inspect the URL:

  • Before clicking on any links or entering information, check the URL displayed after scanning the QR code to ensure it matches the legitimate website.

• Update Software:

  • Keep your device’s operating system and security software up-to-date to protect against potential vulnerabilities.

  • Updates often include security patches that can protect you from new types of scams.

• Educate Yourself:

  • Stay informed about common phishing tactics and be wary of unexpected or unsolicited QR codes.

• Report Suspicious Activity:

  • If you come across a QR code or website that seems suspicious, report it to relevant authorities or the platform where you encountered it.

• Avoid sharing personal information:

  • Be cautious if a QR code asks for sensitive details like passwords, credit card information, or personal data.

  • Legitimate companies usually do not request this via QR codes.

If you suspect you have encountered a dodgy QR code or have been a victim of quishing, report it to the authorities. By doing so, you can help prevent others from falling into the same trap. Stay vigilant and safe while scanning QR codes!
