The rise of digital piracy and illegal streaming platforms has created a dangerous online environment
where unsuspecting users put themselves at serious risk. Many South Africans turn to unauthorised streaming services
to access movies, series, and live sports at a lower cost without realising the hidden dangers of these platforms.
INSIGHTS OF MR. MIKE BOLHUIS:
Illegal streaming services are not only breaking the law but are also a breeding ground for malware, cyber fraud, and identity theft.
When you visit these sites or download pirated content, you expose yourself to malicious software that can steal your personal information, hack your banking details, and hold your device hostage through ransomware.
Under the Cybercrimes Act, individuals who distribute, sell, or knowingly use pirated content can face legal consequences, including a fine, imprisonment of up to 10 years, or both.
This law is in place to protect intellectual property and combat cyber threats that put South African citizens at risk.
HOW ILLEGAL STREAMING PUTS YOU AT RISK:
MALWARE INFECTION:
Many illegal streaming sites contain viruses and malicious software that can compromise your device.
IDENTITY THEFT:
Cybercriminals use these platforms to steal login credentials, banking details, and personal data.
FINANCIAL FRAUD:
Fake streaming sites often trick users into entering credit card details, leading to unauthorised transactions.
RANSOMWARE ATTACKS:
Hackers can lock your device and demand payment to regain access to your files.
LACK OF SECURITY:
Unlike legitimate platforms, illegal sites do not offer secure browsing, thus exposing your data.
DATA TRACKING:
Many of these services secretly collect and sell your private information to third parties.
LEGAL CONSEQUENCES:
Users caught accessing or distributing pirated content will face severe penalties under South African law.
POOR STREAMING QUALITY:
Unlicensed platforms often deliver poor video quality, buffering issues, and fake links.
EXPOSURE TO SCAMS:
Cybercriminals use these sites to lure victims into phishing schemes and fraudulent deals.
NO CUSTOMER SUPPORT:
Unlike legal services, pirate networks do not offer users support, refunds, or security.
EXAMPLE OF CYBER ATTACK FROM ILLEGAL STREAMING:
A South African user searching for free access to a significant sporting event finds a website offering "unlimited live sports streaming."
The site requires the user to create a free account by entering their email and password.
Moments later, a pop-up appears, stating that a "security update" is required to continue watching. When the user downloads the supposed update, it installs malware on their device.
The user's personal information, including banking login details, is stolen within hours.
Criminals use this data to make unauthorised transactions and attempt to take out loans in the victim's name.
When the user tries to report the incident, the website has disappeared, leaving them with no recourse.
CYBERCRIMINALS TARGET INFORMATION SUCH AS:
Banking details and credit card numbers.
Personal identity information, including ID numbers and addresses.
Social media and email login credentials.
Saved passwords for various online accounts.
Contact lists, which can be used for further scams.
It remains essential for all South Africans to protect themselves and their families by avoiding illegal streaming services.
These platforms violate the law and place users at risk of cyberattacks and financial loss.
