Our client was contacted by an individual who identified himself as Edward, requesting to rent an excavator for 10 days near Siyabuswa.
Our client issued a quote and received payment for 5 days' use, including the transport of the excavator, which was then delivered to the Siyabuswa site on 4 April 2024.
On 5 April, at approximately 15:00, site personnel instructed the excavator operator to halt work as they were awaiting sand to be offloaded the following Monday.
The operator secured the excavator at the agreed-upon location and was taken to a guesthouse about 10 km away, where he spent the night.
According to an occupant of the guesthouse, individuals from the site arrived around 16:00 and began working on the machine, claiming it was faulty and needed repairs.
She reported that a white truck with a dark blue or black trailer collected the excavator at around 20:00.
She mentioned that the excavator's interior was dismantled, indicating a possible search for a tracker, even though the excavator was new and the tracker had yet to be installed.
The same individuals from the site visited the operator at the guesthouse on 6 April, apparently to gauge his knowledge of the stolen excavator.
On Monday, 8 April, Edward informed our client that they would only pick up the operator later owing to other commitments.
On Tuesday, 9 April, Cartrack arrived to install the tracker as previously arranged.
The Cartrack employees headed to the Siyabuswa site, meeting the operator to inspect the excavator.
Our client was notified at 15:40 on the same day that the excavator had been stolen.
Our client promptly travelled to Siyabuswa to file a theft case.
