PROJECT: SAPS IMPERSONATOR - "CAPTAIN JOHN SMITH" - MR ANDRIES DE WET EXPOSED

YOU MAY SHARE THIS PUBLIC DOCUMENT

For the past three years, several men from Pretoria, Johannesburg, Vereeniging, Witbank, Middelburg and

other towns in Limpopo have been terrorized and defrauded by a "SAPS OFFICIAL"

who claimed to be "Captain John Smith" or "Captain Piet Smith".

Numerous media articles detailing the actions of "Captain John Smith" were published in the last three years.

Read 2 of the articles below:

Specialised Security Services completed an in-depth investigation into the matter after several complaints were received from men who had been intimidated and defrauded by "Captain John Smith." In many of the cases, the victims were too afraid to open criminal cases with the SAPS, fearing that "Captain John Smith" might be a real police officer and that they might be targeted if they opened cases.

MODUS OPERANDI:

  • "Captain John Smith" chooses his victims randomly; he makes a call to a male victim and claims that a female prostitute has opened a case of rape against him.

  • He often adds that the female was caught with falsified cash and that she claimed she received the cash as payment from him (the male victim).

  • "Captain John Smith" then explains the gravity of the situation to the victim while he plays sounds of CB radio chatter in the background as he speaks to the victim.

  • This is done to add legitimacy to the phone call by letting his caller believe that he is currently in a police station.

  • "Captain John Smith" has also used a tactic of "being interrupted by a detective" during the phone call, again, to add legitimacy to the phone call.

Listen to the following recording of a call between SSS Specialist Investigator Mr Anthony Boucher and a SAPS impersonator who is believed to be affiliated with the "Captain John Smith" impersonator: https://mikebh.link/3u7ynr

  • Once the victim has been intimidated into believing he might be arrested, the "Captain" offers the victim the opportunity to "make the charges go away".

  • At this point, the victim is told that he must pay money to the "Captain" to make the arrest warrant disappear.

  • Once the first payment has been collected from the victim, the calls continue, and the extortion continues.

  • One of the primary phone numbers used by "Captain John Smith" is +27 63 209 6721.

  • One of the phone numbers used by "Captain John Smith" to receive payments into Capitec bank is +27 72 822 4340.

  • In many cases the preferred method of receiving payment by the "Captain" is via E-wallet or Cash Send transaction.

  • The reason this method is preferred is because it requires no identification to withdraw the funds, hence it is a preferred payment method for many criminal activities involving smaller amounts between R500.00 and R5,000.00.

A thorough forensic investigation into the matter revealed the following -

Employing mobile communication, bank account identification, and digital forensics,

Specialised Security Services identified "Captain John Smith" as:

MR ANDRIES DE WET

  • Mr Andries de Wet is a 36-year-old male from Hercules, Pretoria.

  • Mr De Wet used a Capitec bank account to collect payments from a victim in 2022.

  • The bank account was registered to a deceased (date of death 2018) female, who was identified as Mrs Anna van der Walt.

  • The investigation into Mrs van der Walt revealed that her daughter, Miss Marinda van der Walt, was in a romantic relationship with Mr de Wet at that time.

  • Specialised Security Services attempted to contact Miss Marinda van der Walt but she could not be reached.

  • Contact was made with Miss Van der Walt’s brother, who stated that Mr de Wet was responsible for "threatening those men as a police officer".

  • He added that Mr De Wet "uses two to three different phone numbers every week and all of them show some kind of police officer on the WhatsApp profile pictures".

  • More evidence was uncovered during the investigation pointing to Mr Andries de Wet.

Criminal charges will be brought against Mr De Wet and identified accomplices.
