PROJECT: SAFETY GUIDELINES FOR TEENAGERS DURING AND AFTER THE MATRIC CELEBRATIONS

YOU MAY SHARE THIS PUBLIC DOCUMENT

The transition from high school to the next phase of life is marked by moments of celebration, such as matric farewells and holidays. These events, while exciting, expose teenagers to various dangers, including date rape, drunk driving, and police encounters. Adults must provide young people with the knowledge and skills to navigate these situations safely.

UNDERSTANDING CONSENT AND PREVENTING DATE RAPE:

  • Consent is a fundamental concept that teenagers must understand and respect.

    • It is the clear, enthusiastic, and voluntary agreement to engage in any activity.

    • Lack of consent is the cornerstone of sexual assault, including date rape and rape, which often occurs in settings where alcohol, drugs, and lowered inhibitions are present.

  • It is crucial that teenagers know the dangers and create safe spaces.

    • Going out in groups can deter potential perpetrators and provide support in uncomfortable situations.

  • Do not accept opened bottles or drinks under any circumstances.

    • Keep your drinks close and never leave them unattended.

    • Spiking of drinks is rife and life-threatening.

  • Teenagers should communicate their boundaries clearly to avoid peer pressure and other uncomfortable situations.

    • Buddy up with a trusted friend and decide how you will navigate situations.

    • Visit restrooms with friends that you can trust.

  • In the event of a sexual assault, seek immediate help from a trusted friend or emergency services.

    • Avoid showering, changing clothes, or cleaning the scene, as this will destroy vital evidence needed for a case.

    • Organisations like Rape Crisis and Tears Foundation provide counselling, legal advice, and support for survivors.

DRUNK DRIVING:

  • Drunk driving remains a leading cause of accidents among young South Africans, particularly during festive seasons.

  • The consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol are serious.

  • Always arrange safe transportation options, such as designated drivers, trusted ride-sharing services, or pre-booked taxis.

  • Do not allow friends to drive under the influence.

  • Have emergency numbers saved on your cell phone, from a trusted family member, ambulance services, the SAPS, to roadside assistance.

  • If involved in an incident with a drunk driver, call the emergency numbers.

  • Take photos and videos if it is safe, as this information will be critical in legal proceedings.

ENCOUNTERS WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS:

  • Being pulled over by the police can be intimidating, especially for young people who may be unsure of their rights.

  • Teenagers and the rest of the public must understand that they should stay respectful.

  • Stay calm and polite, keeping your hands visible.

  • Do not make any sudden movements and follow instructions from the officer.

  • Teenagers may remain silent, refuse consent to searches without a warrant, and request legal representation if arrested.

  • Record the encounter on a smartphone, if possible, as this will provide valuable evidence if rights are violated.

PARENTS:

  • Parents play a critical role in preparing their children for these situations.

  • Open communication about the potential dangers and clear guidance on how to stay safe are key.

  • Discuss what to do if things go wrong, including who to call and where to go in emergencies.

  • Agree on curfews, check-in times, and safe behaviours, ensuring teens understand the importance of these rules.

  • Emphasise that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

It is more important than ever to equip our teenagers with the necessary knowledge and skills

as matric holidays and farewells approach.
