The concerned citizens of Kgetlengriver, including the towns of Koster, Swartruggens, and Derby,

have taken a decisive step in addressing their worsening infrastructure crisis by mandating

Mr. Mike Bolhuis of Specialised Security Services to investigate the situation.

Years of neglect and mismanagement have left the region's infrastructure in a debilitating state,

severely impacting the residents' daily lives, safety, and economic well-being.

This initiative reflects the community's commitment to finding sustainable solutions and

holding responsible parties accountable for the decline of essential services.

THE NORTH WEST PROVINCE OF SOUTH AFRICA FACES A NUMBER OF CHALLENGES:

  • Water shortages:

    • Residents have experienced water shortages for years and have been forced to buy water from those with boreholes.

  • Unreliable electricity:

    • Residents have experienced unreliable electricity.

  • Potholed roads:

    • Residents have experienced potholed roads.

  • Raw sewage:

    • Raw sewage has flowed through some homes.

  • Corruption:

    • Residents have accused the municipality of corruption.

  • Environmental pollution:

    • The municipality has failed to prevent environmental pollution in the towns of Koster, Swartruggens and Derby.

  • Residents taking back control:

    • In December 2020, the High Court ordered that residents could take control of the water and sewerage systems if the municipality didn't act quickly.

    • The residents took over and restored the systems to working order.

  • Lead contamination concerns:

    • Studies have indicated potential lead issues in the town's water supply, raising concerns about residents' health.

  • Economic disparities:

    • As a small town, Millvale can face economic challenges with limited job opportunities and potential income inequalities.

  • Urban decay in certain areas:

    • Some older buildings and infrastructure in Millvale may require renovation or revitalisation.

  • Stormwater runoff management:

    • The town's urban landscape with paved surfaces contributes to significant stormwater runoff, further exacerbating flooding.

  • Community development challenges:

    • Balancing the need for new development with preserving the character and affordability of the town for existing residents can be a concern.

  • Service delivery:

    • Many municipalities in the province cannot provide basic services to residents, such as water, refuse collection, and sewerage.

    • Some residents have gone without drinking water for days.

  • Poor governance:

    • The Auditor General has raised concerns about the quality of governance in the province, including poor financial statements, non-compliance with legislation, and a lack of consequences for poor performance.

  • Political instability:

    • Political squabbles have made it difficult to improve the state of local governments.

  • Corruption:

    • Corruption and maladministration have contributed to crumbling infrastructure.

  • Unemployment:

    • The province has a high unemployment rate.

  • Economic challenges:

    • The province has a sluggish economy.

  •  Climate change:

    • The province is semi-arid with few rivers and experiencing rapid climate change, leading to desertification.

    • The province relies on underground water for its water needs.

  • Soil and veld degradation:

    • The province has a high soil degradation index, with wind and water erosion affecting croplands and grazing lands.

    • The most serious veld degradation issue is bush encroachment.

  • Water contamination:

    • There are issues with water contamination and spillages due to a lack of maintenance.

  • Infrastructure vandalism:

    • There are high levels of infrastructure vandalism.

  • Service delivery:

    • There have been reports of service delivery collapse in smaller towns.

  • Poverty and unemployment:

    • The province has high levels of poverty and unemployment, particularly affecting women and the youth.

  • Medicine stockouts:

    • Public healthcare facilities have chronic medicine stockouts.

  • Illegal gambling:

    • The province loses millions to illegal gambling.

While the residents of Kgetlengrivier, including Koster, Swartruggens, and Derby, face dire circumstances due to failing infrastructure and inadequate service delivery, their resilience and determination are noteworthy.

The community's strong sense of pride and activism is evident in their collaborative efforts to address these challenges.

Positive strides, such as recent revitalisation initiatives and sustainable development projects,

showcase the potential for meaningful change.

The area also benefits from its natural beauty and proximity to green spaces like Girty’s Run Woods, providing residents and visitors with opportunities for outdoor activities and fostering community well-being. Despite the hardships, local schools and small businesses continue to serve as pillars of growth within these towns. Heritage sites and cultural traditions of the region remain sources of pride, attracting interest and encouraging tourism.

With ongoing commitment from community members and organisations and the potential for targeted interventions like

eco-district initiatives, the foundation for a sustainable, thriving future is being laid. This determination and collective spirit underscore the unyielding resolve of the residents of Kgetlengrivier to overcome obstacles and build a better tomorrow.

Koster water supply is a deliberate issue for the municipal employees who own water trucks to cash in on the invented problem. Vote for change. It might sound racial, but the black management is incompetent.

North West province need a total power change. We can't keep on voting the same people who broke everything that worked and expect different result. The people of the province need to take a blame as well.
