PROJECT: PUBLIC WARNING - THE HIDDEN DANGERS OF ONLINE AND TRADITIONAL GAMBLING

YOU MAY SHARE THIS PUBLIC DOCUMENT

Gambling, whether online or in-person, may seem like an entertaining activity or a quick way to earn money, but it often masks serious risks. The growing popularity of online gambling platforms in South Africa has made access more readily available than ever, leading many individuals down a dangerous path of addiction, financial ruin, and emotional distress.

RISKS:

  • Unpredictable outcomes:

    • Gambling relies on random number generators (RNGs) and pre-set return-to-player (RTP) rates.

    • These systems ensure that casinos profit in the long run while keeping your wins entirely random.

    • No strategy can guarantee consistent success.

  • Financial losses:

    • Online gambling platforms are designed with an average RTP of 90-98%, meaning that for every R100 you wager, you will lose R2 to R10 on average.

  • Psychological manipulation:

    • Bright visuals, sounds, and near-misses encourage players to keep betting, even when they are losing.

  • Legal Uncertainty:

    • In South Africa, only licensed online sports betting platforms are legal. Gambling on unregulated international sites is risky and provides no consumer protection.

GAMBLING AS A TOOL FOR CRIMINAL ACTIVITY:

  • It is important to note that criminals can also exploit online gambling.

  • In the past, we have encountered cases where criminals have used their online gambling accounts as a method to hide or launder money obtained through scams.

  • They often deposit the funds into their gambling accounts, place bets or "play" for a short while, and then withdraw the money back into their personal bank accounts.

  • This process makes it difficult for law enforcement and banks to trace the origin of the funds.

  • Criminals know that large, active gambling accounts may not immediately raise red flags for banks or authorities, and this manipulation of the system helps them cover their tracks.

  • Unfortunately, this can result in innocent victims losing significant amounts of money without any easy way to trace or recover it.

THE ADDICTION:

Gambling addiction is a progressive problem that can disrupt every aspect of life.

1. Do you often gamble for longer than planned or spend more money than intended?

2. Have you tried to stop gambling but found it difficult?

3. Do you gamble to escape stress, depression, or financial trouble?

4. Have you lied to family or friends about your gambling habits?

5. Are you borrowing money or selling possessions to fund your gambling?

COMBATTING THE ADDICTION:

  • Acknowledge the problem and accept that gambling has become an issue and seek support.

  • Set limits, create a strict budget for entertainment and stick to it.

  • It is a clear red flag if you cannot stick with your own set of limits.

  • Avoid triggers, and stay away from gambling websites, casinos, and advertisements.

  • Be accountable and share your struggles with trusted family members or friends.

  • Change your focus and create alternative activities, such as new hobbies, exercise, or volunteering to occupy your time.

Gambling, often perceived as a form of entertainment or a way to achieve financial gains, can have serious consequences when it becomes excessive. For many, it transitions from a recreational activity to a destructive habit, leading to financial, emotional, and social problems. Understanding the pitfalls of excessive gambling is crucial for identifying and addressing

this behaviour before it escalates into a severe issue.

  • Financial consequences include significant losses, prompting some individuals to borrow from friends, family, or financial institutions.

  • This can result in mounting debts and, in severe cases, bankruptcy.

  • Gambling addicts may divert money meant for essential expenses, such as rent, groceries, or bills, to fund their habit.

  • This can lead to homelessness, utility disconnections, and other financial crises.

  • Excessive gambling depletes savings accounts and derails financial goals, such as retirement planning, education funding, or property investments, leaving individuals financially insecure.

  • The emotional and psychological impact is devastating and the financial strain caused by gambling losses can lead to chronic stress and anxiety, affecting an individual's mental well-being.

  • Feelings of guilt, hopelessness, and regret over gambling can spiral into depression. In extreme cases, this emotional turmoil may lead to suicidal thoughts or actions.

  • Excessive gambling often fosters compulsive behaviour, where individuals feel unable to stop gambling even when aware of its negative consequences.

  • This loss of control exacerbates feelings of helplessness.

  • The secrecy, financial instability, and neglect associated with gambling can erode trust and strain relationships with family, friends, and partners.

  • Many gamblers isolate themselves to hide their addiction, resulting in the loss of social connections and support systems.

  • Excessive gambling can lead to arguments, breakdowns in communication, and even domestic violence in extreme cases.

  • Gambling addicts may experience decreased productivity, absenteeism, or lack of focus at work due to stress, preoccupation with gambling, or exhaustion from late-night gambling sessions.

  • The financial and emotional toll of excessive gambling can lead to job loss, either due to termination or resignation, further exacerbating financial challenges.

  • Colleagues and employers may lose trust in individuals caught embezzling funds or exhibiting erratic behaviour due to gambling.

  • Some individuals turn to alcohol or drugs to cope with gambling-related stress, leading to substance abuse issues.

Gambling is often presented as harmless entertainment, but this article clearly demonstrates the hidden dangers and risks that many people overlook. Financial losses, psychological manipulation and even exploitation by criminals are serious issues that require more awareness. It is better to try demo versions. Do not invest your own money there.
