PROJECT: PROTECTING YOUR CHILD FROM ONLINE PREDATORS

YOU MAY SHARE THIS PUBLIC DOCUMENT

A recent case brought to the attention of

Mr Mike Bolhuis, owner of Specialised Security Services (SSS), highlights the real dangers children face online.

A concerned mother reached out to Mr Bolhuis after discovering that her 13-year-old daughter

had been communicating with a probable online sexual predator.

Despite having a strong relationship with her daughter and discussing online safety regularly,

the child was ensnared by someone she had met online.

THE CASE:

  • The situation unfolded when the daughter’s phone was taken away for exam preparation, only for the mother to find her using a sibling’s spare phone.

  • Further investigation revealed explicit messages between her daughter and an unknown individual.

  • It was even more concerning that the daughter had also been using her mother’s laptop to continue communicating with this person under the pretence of schoolwork.

  • The mother promptly opened a case with the South African Police Service (SAPS).

HOW TO STAY VIGILANT IN PROTECTING YOUR CHILD AGAINST ONLINE PREDATORS:

Parents must be vigilant about their children’s online activities.

Here are some signs that an online predator has targeted your child:

  • Secrecy Around Devices:

    • If your child suddenly becomes secretive about their phone or computer usage, it might indicate that they are hiding something.

  • Changes in Behaviour:

    • Noticeable shifts in mood, such as increased anxiety, depression, or irritability, are also a red flag.

  • New Friends:

    • It is worth investigating if your child mentions new friends you have not met, particularly older ones.

  • Unusual Activity:

    • Watch for unexplained changes in your child’s online activity, like using devices late at night or creating new social media accounts.

  • Withdrawing from Family:

    • A child who withdraws from family activities or becomes unusually defensive when asked about their online interactions could be under the influence of a predator.

IMMEDIATE STEPS TO TAKE:

In the unfortunate event that you suspect your child is being stalked online:

  • Contact Authorities:

    • Immediately open a case with the SAPS or a local law enforcement agency.

  • Reach Out to Specialists:

    • Contact Mr Mike Bolhuis of SSS directly.

    • His Cyberteam specialises in cases involving online predators and can offer expert guidance and support.

  • Secure Devices:

    • When you suspect something, restrict access to all devices and change passwords to prevent further contact.

  • Monitor and Educate:

    • Keep a close eye on your child’s online activity and continue educating them about the dangers of sharing personal information online.

  • Alert Schools and Caregivers:

    • Make sure your child’s school and caregivers are aware of the situation and advise them to provide additional supervision.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR CHILD MOVING FORWARD:

  • Follow Up with Law Enforcement:

    • Stay in touch with the authorities and ensure they follow up on your case. Ask about specialised units that focus on cybercrimes and child protection.

  • Educate and Empower Your Child:

    • Look for workshops or talks in your area about online safety, particularly those that address the dangers of online predators.

    • Schools or community centres often offer these resources.

  • Control and Monitor Digital Presence:

    • Review your child’s social media accounts and close any that are unnecessary or pose a risk.

    • Consider using parental control software to monitor online activity and to alert you to potential dangers.

  • Address Privacy Concerns:

    • Be cautious about who you share personal information with and ensure that addresses, phone numbers, and other sensitive details are not easily accessible.

  • Coordinate with Schools:

    • Discuss the situation with your child’s school and ensure they are aware of the risks.

    • They can help by providing additional supervision or making special arrangements for your child’s safety.

  • Emotional Support:

    • Do not forget the emotional toll such situations take on a child.

    • Professional counselling will be beneficial if your child is showing signs of distress.

Do not think that this cannot happen to your child!

The youth of today are intelligent and technologically savvy—more so than their parents.

They know how to manipulate and test their boundaries. They are ideal victims of predators because of their emotional inexperience and lack of maturity. By staying vigilant and taking proactive steps, you will help to protect your child from the dangers posed by online predators.
