The prevalence of sexual violence in South Africa is a deeply concerning crisis.

It is essential to emphasise that the responsibility for these crimes lies solely with the perpetrators.

Statistics highlight the severity of the issue:

  • Rape: In the first quarter of 2023 (January to March), 10,512 women were reported raped.

  • Attempted Murder: During the same period, 1,485 attempted murders of women were recorded.

  • Murder: A total of 969 women were murdered between January and March 2023.

  • Assault: Over 15,000 cases of assault against women were reported in the first quarter of 2023.

  • According to SAPS’ statistics, 966 women were murdered during the first quarter of 2024/25, 1,644 murders were attempted against women, and 13,757 women were assaulted with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Additionally, between April 2022 and March 2023, a total of 53,498 sexual offences

were reported to the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Equipping women with safety information is crucial

in mitigating risks and fostering a safer society.

UNDERSTANDING CRIMINAL ATTACKS:

  • OPPORTUNISTIC ATTACKS:

    • Many attacks occur in areas with a perceived lack of security, such as poorly lit streets, isolated locations, or during reduced visibility.

    • Criminals often exploit situations where individuals appear vulnerable or distracted.

  • PLANNED ATTACKS:

    • Some attacks are premeditated, with perpetrators targeting specific individuals or locations.

    • This can involve stalking, surveillance, or creating situations where victims are isolated.

  • SOCIAL ENGINEERING:

    • Perpetrators may use manipulation, deception, or coercion to gain trust or create situations where they can commit an assault.

    • This can occur both online and in person.

  • ATTACKS WITHIN FAMILIAR SPACES:

    • Many attacks occur within the victim's own home or are perpetrated by individuals known to them.

    • It is crucial to recognise that danger does not always come from strangers.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS:

  • SITUATIONAL AWARENESS:

    • Always be aware of your surroundings.

    • Avoid distractions like excessive phone use while walking in unfamiliar areas.

    • Trust your instincts - if a situation feels unsafe, remove yourself from it.

  • TRAVEL SAFETY:

    • Avoid walking alone at night, especially in poorly lit areas.

    • Travel in groups or with trusted individuals whenever possible.

    • Remain aware of your surroundings when using public transportation and avoid isolated areas.

    • When driving, keep your car doors locked and windows up.

  • HOME SECURITY:

    • Ensure that your home is well-lit and secure.

    • Install strong locks and security systems.

    • Be cautious about who you allow into your home.

  • SOCIAL GATHERINGS:

    • Be mindful of alcohol consumption.

    • Never leave your drink unattended.

    • Stay with trusted friends and have a plan for getting home safely.

  • SELF-DEFENSE:

    • Consider taking self-defence classes to learn basic protective techniques.

    • Carry a personal safety alarm to alert others in case of danger.

  • ONLINE SAFETY:

    • Be cautious when sharing personal information online.

    • Avoid meeting strangers from the internet in person without precautions.

    • Always inform someone you trust about your location and who you are meeting when going out.

  • COMMUNITY SUPPORT:

    • Engage with your community and support organisations that combat gender-based violence.

    • Report any suspicious activity to authorities or community safety groups.

IMPORTANT CONSIDERAIONS:

  • No single safety measure can guarantee complete protection.

  • Perpetrators are responsible for their actions, not the victims.

  • Supporting survivors of sexual violence is essential in fostering a culture of awareness and prevention.

It is essential to understand that this information is not intended to place blame on victims but

to empower individuals with knowledge that could save lives.
