PROJECT: PRINCIPLES OF CRIME PREVENTION

YOU MAY SHARE THIS PUBLIC DOCUMENT

Crime prevention principles will help reduce opportunities for crime at your home, workplace, or business.

They apply to individuals, communities, organisations, and companies and serve as a checklist

for identifying steps you can take in your specific situation.

It is not necessary to apply all principles at once; even implementing one or a combination of a few will make a significant difference. When assessing your property or premises, consider viewing it from the perspective of a potential offender.

Identify weaknesses, vulnerable spots, and areas that offer concealment and prioritise these for improvement.

  • Target hardening:

    • Strengthen your property to make it difficult for criminals to gain access.

    • Upgrade locks on doors, windows, sheds, and outbuildings regularly.

    • Install slash jammers on vulnerable entry points.

    • Use strong, secure passwords to protect your online accounts.

  • Target removal:

    • Keep valuable items out of sight to reduce their attractiveness to thieves.

    • Avoid leaving valuables such as laptops, phones, keys, and bags visible through windows.

    • Store your vehicle in a garage and keep valuables out of sight.

    • Be cautious what you share online, as it could be used to track or locate you, or to advertise that you are away from home.

  • Reduce the means:

    • Eliminate items that could assist in committing a crime.

    • Store tools, ladders, and other potential aids securely.

    • Keep wheelie bins and other climbable objects out of reach.

    • Remove rubble and loose bricks that could be used in a break-in.

  • Reducing the payoff:

    • Decrease the reward a criminal might gain from committing an offence.

    • Mark your property with identifiable features.

    • Label items in a way that discourages thieves from reselling them.

    • Avoid purchasing items you suspect may be stolen.

  • Access control:

    • Implement measures to control access to your home, business, or other locations.

    • Always lock doors and windows to your home and vehicles.

    • Maintain fences, hedges, and other boundaries in good condition.

    • Install security systems such as entry barriers, guards, or ID checks at commercial properties.

  • Surveillance:

    • Enhance monitoring around your property to discourage criminal activity.

    • Trim high hedges or fences that allow offenders to operate undetected.

    • Consider installing CCTV systems at homes, businesses, or public spaces.

    • Set up a Neighbourhood Watch program to keep an eye on local activity.

  • Environmental change:

    • Maintain your property and surroundings to reflect care and attention.

    • Remove graffiti and ensure that waste is managed correctly.

    • Report issues like illegal waste dumping or malfunctioning streetlights to authorities.

    • Collaborate with local authorities to close poorly maintained footpaths.

  • Rule setting:

    • Modify habits by establishing rules and clearly display signage where needed.

    • Set a rule that the last person to enter or leave locks the door and removes the keys.

    • Require visitors to report to reception when entering commercial sites.

    • Clearly state restricted access times for certain areas.

  • Increase the chances of being caught:

    • Boost the likelihood of apprehending offenders to deter criminal behaviour.

    • Use well-maintained dusk-to-dawn lighting to enhance visibility.

    • Install high-quality CCTV and alarm systems, particularly in vulnerable areas.

    • Upgrade security measures to slow down offenders and increase the time needed to gain access.

    • Think of having a guard dog where possible.

  • Deflecting offenders:

    • Discourage offenders or redirect their intentions away from your property.

    • Use timer switches to make it appear as if the home is occupied during evening hours.

    • Partner with agencies to offer youth diversion programs.

    • Provide referrals for offenders to drug rehabilitation or other support services.

Crime remains a serious concern in South Africa, and these measures are essential

to protect homes, businesses, and public spaces.

The role of individuals in crime prevention is crucial; by being proactive, vigilant, and responsible, each person contributes to a safer environment. Simple actions like securing personal property, maintaining awareness of one's surroundings, and cooperating with local law enforcement will have a powerful impact. If you have information that will prevent a crime,

it is your civil duty to report it to the necessary authorities.

Crime prevention is a shared responsibility, and when communities work together to apply these principles,

they will create safer, more resilient neighbourhoods that deter crime and support the well-being of all citizens.
