Specialised Security Services recently assisted a client in saving what would have been a R398,000.00 loss,
and this was possible because the client used our pre-transaction verification service.
Prevention is better than cure mindset is one that we highly recommend the public to adopt -
as a precautionary measure, especially regarding online and new business-related transactions.
How Cybercrime has escalated in recent years has led to millions of Rand being lost to scams,
especially when it comes to scammers that operate online using social media advertising as well as "fake tender scam"
that has been responsible for significant losses in the small to medium-sized business sector.
THE FOLLOWING EXAMPLE EXPLAINS HOW OUR CLIENT NEARLY BECAME A VICTIM HIMSELF WHEN HE PLANNED TO ENTER WHAT SEEMED TO BE A LEGITIMATE BUSINESS TRANSACTION:
Our client was contacted by a mining company who requested a quotation on a specific product.
A week before receiving the request from the mining company, our client received an email from another company that advertised that specific product for a very reasonable price.
A few days later, our client received a follow-up phone call from the company that sent the email.
The call was simply to confirm whether the email had been received and whether our client was interested in any of the products.
Two days after the phone call, our client received a request from a mining company.
He contacted his suppliers, and the quotations he received would not allow a fair markup on the product for resale.
At that point, our client remembered the company that emailed him a price list just days before.
He contacted the company and requested a quotation from them for the full order that the mining company placed with him.
The quotation that our client received from the company allowed him to resell the product to the mining company and he would stand to make a substantial profit.
Our client quoted the mining company, and they immediately accepted his quotation, stating that it was the best quote that they have received by far.
A purchase order was generated and sent to our client.
At that stage, he needed to secure the products from the supply company and deliver them to the mining company.
Our client did some basic research of his own on the companies involved and it all seemed above board.
They had websites, contact information, and social media pages in place, and they even had mostly positive reviews.
A feeling of uncertainty convinced our client to contact us and request a quick verification investigation before he paid the supply company.
SSS conducted a cyber verification investigation and found that neither the mining company
nor the supply company were legitimate. Both companies existed, but cybercriminals
put measures in place to generate fake websites, emails and contact numbers.
During this investigation, we were able to warn both companies about the fact that their identities were being used to scam smaller companies. We saved our client a loss of R398,000.00, and we prevented a crime from happening.
The preventative verification investigation ended up saving our client a substantial amount of money and valuable time, resources, and expenses.
WHY ARE VERIFICATION INVESTIGATIONS BETTER?
You save yourself from losing money and/or items.
You prevent a crime from happening.
You prevent further costs that might be incurred during investigations and legal proceedings.
You save time and you protect your reputation.
You have the opportunity to warn others about the situation.
You prevent the frustration and mental stress that becoming a victim of crime entails.
WHEN SHOULD A VERIFICATION INVESTIGATION BE REQUESTED?
Whenever you deal with a new company or individual you have never met.
Whenever you purchase or sell something of value online.
Whenever you plan to make a potentially life-changing decision.
Whenever you feel uneasy about a transaction, a person, or an entity that you are dealing with.
Preventing a problem from occurring causes a lot less stress than having to react to a problem that has already occurred.
