PROJECT: ONLINE BULLYING

YOU MAY SHARE THIS PUBLIC DOCUMENT

Specialises Security Services is contacted on a regular basis by concerned parents whose children have fallen victim

to online bullying. Online bullying, also known as cyberbullying, is a pervasive issue in today's digital world.

It takes various forms, each with the potential to cause significant emotional and psychological harm.

FORMS OF ONLINE BULLYING:

  • Harassment:

    • Repeatedly sending offensive, rude, and insulting messages.

  • Cyberstalking:

    • Continuous and excessive monitoring or tracking of someone's online activities.

  • Outing:

    • Sharing someone's personal or private information without their consent.

  • Exclusion:

    • Deliberately excluding someone from an online group or activity.

  • Impersonation:

    • Pretending to be someone else to damage their reputation or relationships.

SIGNS OF ONLINE BULLYING:

Identifying online bullying early can prevent long-term damage. Here are the five most important signs to watch for:

  • Behavioural Changes:

    • Sudden mood, behaviour, or school performance changes.

  • Avoidance of Online Activity:

    • Reluctance to use devices or participate in online activities they previously enjoyed.

  • Secretive Behaviour:

    • Being secretive about their online interactions or appearing anxious when receiving notifications.

  • Emotional Distress:

    • Signs of depression, anxiety, or heightened stress, such as crying, irritability, or anger.

  • Social Withdrawal:

    • Avoiding friends, family, and social situations and showing signs of loneliness or isolation.

SAFEGUARDING MINORS AND VULNERABLE INDIVIDUALS:

  • Educate About Online Safety:

    • Teach them about the risks of online interactions and the importance of privacy settings.

  • Encourage Open Communication:

    • Create an environment where they feel comfortable discussing their online experiences without fear of judgment.

  • Monitor Online Activity:

    • Monitor their online interactions and the platforms they use while respecting their privacy.

  • Promote Healthy Online Behaviour:

    • Encourage positive online behaviour and discourage retaliatory actions.

  • Be Aware of Warning Signs:

    • Stay vigilant for any signs of distress or behavioural changes that might indicate bullying.

ACTION STEPS TO TAKE IF YOU ARE A VICTIM OF ONLINE BULLYING:

  • Do Not Respond:

    • Avoid engaging with the bully, as responding can escalate the situation.

  • Document Everything:

    • Record all bullying instances, including screenshots and URLs.

  • Report the Bullying:

    • Use the reporting features on social media platforms and websites to report the bully's behaviour.

  • Seek Support:

    • Talk to friends, family, or a mental health professional for emotional support and advice.

  • Strengthen Privacy Settings:

    • Adjust your privacy settings on social media to control who can contact you and view your content.

Online bullying is a serious issue that can have profound effects on individuals, especially minors and vulnerable people.

If you or someone you know is experiencing online bullying, remember that help is available,

and taking the proper steps can mitigate the damage and support recovery.
