PROJECT: MATRIC FAREWELL, AFTER-PARTY AND RAGE/HOLIDAY SAFETY

YOU MAY SHARE THIS PUBLIC DOCUMENT

Parents should have open, honest conversations with their children, especially during this time of year. While we trust that instilling strong values and repeatedly discussing potential dangers has helped them develop caution, it is important to remember that even the best-prepared individuals can face unexpected situations that may quickly escalate into violence.

MATRIC FAREWELL DANCE AND AFTER-PARTY SAFETY:

  • Travel and Transport:

    • Pre-arrange transportation and use trusted services. Always arrange for a designated sober driver. Ride-sharing apps like Uber or Bolt are safer than relying on an unknown person.

    • Use emergency apps like Life360 or Find My Friends to share your location with trusted people in real-time.

    • Avoid walking alone at night, and always stay with your trusted group of friends.

    • Know the venue's layout, including emergency exits, and have a plan for how you will get home safely.

  • Personal Safety:

    • Stay with your group at all times. A buddy system is a great way to ensure everyone checks in on each other throughout the night.

    • Keep your drink safe—never leave it unattended or accept drinks from strangers. Use drink protection covers like NightCap or other drink-spiking prevention tools.

    • Open your own drink and keep it with you.

    • Avoid drinking mixed alcoholic drinks in glasses bought at the bar.

    • Avoid ice from the bar.

    • Monitor your alcohol intake to avoid situations where you are unable to make sound decisions.

    • Keep your phone charged and download emergency apps like bSafe or My SOS. These apps can alert family or friends if you feel unsafe.

    • Trust your instincts—leave immediately with a friend when you feel uncomfortable or in danger. There is no reason to compromise your personal boundaries and safety.

  • Social Media and Information Safety:

    • Do not overshare on social media.

    • Be cautious and keep your plans and location private until after the event.

    • Criminals can use this information to their advantage.

    • Inform a trusted adult of your plans and movements and keep them updated if there are any changes.

  • Handling Unwanted Advances:

    • Be firm and clear if someone makes you feel uncomfortable.

    • Do not be afraid to walk away or ask for help.

    • Use safety apps like Circle of 6, which allows you to discreetly alert a circle of friends if you need assistance or feel in danger.

MATRIC RAGE/HOLIDAY SAFETY MEASURES:

  • Accommodation Safety:

    • Choose accommodation with good security features, such as keycards, CCTV, and security guards.

    • Store valuables safely in a secure location, like a hotel safe, and avoid carrying all your cash or valuables at once.

    • Ensure that doors and windows are locked before you leave or go to sleep.

  • Travel Safety:

    • Stick to familiar routes and never travel alone, especially at night.

    • Always let someone know where you are going.

    • Use trusted ride-hailing services and location-sharing apps like Google Maps or Waze.

    • If you are heading to remote areas, consider downloading offline maps.

    • Emergency apps like 112 South Africa can provide instant access to emergency services anywhere.

  • Party and Social Safety:

    • Stick with your group and check in regularly using location-sharing apps like WhatsApp Live Location.

    • Drink responsibly and avoid accepting substances from anyone.

    • Download SafeTravel or ICE (In Case of Emergency) apps, which can store emergency contacts and medical information, accessible to first responders.

  • Financial Safety:

    • Carry only necessary cash and use mobile wallets or prepaid debit cards to limit the impact if you lose your wallet.

    • Keep it close to your body.

    • Avoid flashing money or expensive items like smartphones or jewellery in public.

  • Emergency Preparedness:

    • Know the local emergency numbers, such as 10111 for the police and 112 for emergency services, and save them on speed dial.

    • Install My SOS or 911 South Africa for instant emergency support, including options to call for medical, police, or roadside assistance.

    • Ensure that trusted contacts can access your location through apps like Life360 or Find My Friends.

GENERAL:

  • Keep a separate copy of your ID document, driver's licence and medical aid card with you.

RECOMMENDED EMERGENCY APPS:

  • bSafe:

    • Features an SOS button that sends a live GPS location to your emergency contacts and audio and video recordings of what's happening.

  • Life360:

    • This app allows friends and family to see each other's real-time locations and provides alerts when someone reaches a specific destination.

  • Find My Friends:

    • Built into iPhones, it allows location sharing with selected contacts.

  • My SOS South Africa:

    • A local emergency app that provides access to emergency numbers and services.

  • 112 South Africa:

    • Offers direct access to emergency services no matter where you are in the country.

  • Circle of 6:

    • You can send a quick SOS alert to six trusted contacts with your location if you feel unsafe.

  • ICE (In Case of Emergency):

    • Stores vital medical information and emergency contacts that first responders can access.

Your young adult child must know what to do if they lose their phone, get separated from friends, or feel unsafe.

They should respect their own personal boundaries and not feel pressured into doing something they are uncomfortable with.

It is always best to avoid alcohol completely. If he/she is not comfortable with sharing their plans or life location with you as a parent, ask them to share with an older sibling or someone who will not participate in the celebrations but who will be available to help at the first request.

Specialised Security Services invites the public to the Mike Bolhuis Daily Projects WhatsApp Group.
