Scammers have realised that South Africans are becoming more reluctant to deposit money into PayPal or foreign bank accounts. As a result, they have developed a new strategy, luring victims into responding to fake inquiries. Through these fabricated inquiries, scammers successfully carry out phishing attacks, gaining access to victims' bank accounts.
They then take control of these accounts without the owners' knowledge.
This often occurs when scammers target deceased individuals' family members using the deceased's bank accounts,
which may still be active. They provide these account numbers to scam victims to make their scheme seem legitimate.
Legal action becomes extremely difficult once the victims realise they have been scammed because
the scammers are typically based outside the country.
CRITICAL SAFETY MEASURES:
Immediately update the passwords for compromised accounts and all other sensitive accounts, including email, banking, and social media.
Activate 2FA (two-factor authentication) on all accounts to add an extra layer of security.
Immediately contact your bank to freeze or monitor your accounts for unauthorised activity if your banking details are compromised.
Report the phishing attempt to the relevant authorities (e.g., your local cybercrime unit, the bank's fraud department) and the service provider where the phishing occurred (e.g. email provider, social media platform).
Regularly check your bank and online accounts for suspicious transactions or activities.
Consider setting up alerts for account changes.
Run a comprehensive antivirus scan on all your devices to detect and remove malicious software that may have been installed.
Avoid clicking on additional links or responding to scammers.
Block and report suspicious senders immediately.
Stay informed about current phishing techniques to avoid falling victim again.
Be cautious of unsolicited emails, messages, or calls requesting personal information.
If sensitive personal data has been exposed, look into services that monitor and protect against identity theft.
In cases of significant financial or identity loss, file a report with local law enforcement to document the incident and assist in legal proceedings.
AFFIDAVIT:
Victims whose identities or bank accounts have been hijacked are advised to obtain an affidavit from their local police station.
This will help protect them in case legal charges are filed against them if a scam is linked to their bank account.
