The Twin SIM scam is an emerging and sophisticated form of fraud that has recently come to our attention. Fraudsters use this method to duplicate your cell phone number onto another SIM card, allowing them to intercept your calls and SMS messages. This can have serious consequences, especially regarding sensitive information and financial transactions.
HOW IT WORKS:
Scammers gain control of your primary cell phone number by disrupting your network coverage and diverting your phone calls and SMS messages to a secondary "twin" SIM card.
This tactic enables them to receive your One-Time Passwords (OTPs) and other critical notifications that can be used to defraud you.
HOW TO IDENTIFY THE SCAM:
Unexpected Loss of Signal:
Your cell phone suddenly loses signal in areas where you usually have good coverage.
Missing OTPs:
You do not receive OTPs or other important messages, even after multiple attempts.
No Incoming Calls or Messages:
You stop receiving calls or messages altogether, indicating that your number might be compromised.
PREVENTATIVE MEASURES:
Monitor Your Signal:
Regularly check your phone's signal strength.
If you experience an unexpected signal loss, contact your service provider immediately.
Enable Account Alerts:
Set up alerts with your bank and other sensitive accounts to notify you of suspicious activities.
Use Secure Channels:
Whenever possible, use secure apps for OTPs and communications instead of relying solely on SMS.
THE IMPORTANCE OF PROTECTING YOUR CELL PHONE AND SENSITIVE DATA:
Your cell phone is a gateway to your personal and financial information. Safeguarding it is crucial in preventing
unauthorised access and potential fraud. By being vigilant and proactive, you can reduce the risk of falling victim
to scams like the Twin SIM fraud.
If you suspect that you have been targeted by this scam, it is imperative to act quickly.
Contact your service provider and your bank immediately.
