THE CASE:
SSS recently received a distressing case involving a man who goes by the name Christopher Hayden Miles Webb.
He presented himself as a facilitator for securing funding for various projects, claiming to have connections with overseas investors.
Unfortunately, what transpired was a complex web of deception and financial exploitation.
Several individuals, including our client, were enticed into investing R100,000.00 each in what was promised to be a cannabis project on their respective farms.
This initiative was supposedly funded by foreign investors, and Mr Webb offered to assist in securing this funding.
Regrettably, despite the promises and ongoing negotiations that commenced back in February 2023, they have not received any funding to date.
Mr Webb entered into an agreement with them a few weeks ago, assuring them that he would repay the invested funds within five days, yet this commitment remains unfulfilled.
What makes this case even more concerning is that upon reaching out to the alleged overseas investors, it was discovered that they had no knowledge of Mr Webb or his operations.
It is clear that he has misled our client and potentially many others, with the intention of siphoning money under false pretences.
RED FLAGS:
Guaranteed High Returns:
Be cautious of investments promising unusually high, guaranteed returns with little to no risk.
If it sounds too good to be true, it often is.
Lack of Regulation or Documentation:
Legitimate investments are typically regulated and require proper documentation.
If you cannot find information about the investment's regulatory status or receive official documents, be wary.
Pressure to Act Quickly:
Scammers often pressure you to make immediate decisions.
Take your time to research and consider any investment opportunity thoroughly.
Unsolicited Offers:
If you receive unsolicited investment offers via phone, email, or social media, be cautious.
Reputable investments are usually sought out, not pushed onto potential investors.
Complex and Vague Strategies:
If the investment strategy is overly complex or the details are vague, it may be an attempt to hide the true nature of the investment.
Make sure you understand where your money is going and how it will be used.
SAFETY MEASURES:
To protect yourself and others from falling victim to such scams, SSS urges you to exercise due diligence when entering into financial agreements with unfamiliar individuals.
Always verify the legitimacy of the people and organisations you deal with.
If you have no other recourse to verify your potential investment, it is advisable to contact Mr Mike Bolhuis and his organisation, Specialised Security Services, first before entering into agreements with unknown entities.
