Several banks have been warning their clients to remain vigilant against deceptive schemes offering fake discounts.
SSS has been doing the same for the past decade and here are some of our posts to examine thoroughly:
Scammers pose as reputable companies, such as airlines and streaming services, and entice individuals with bogus discounts in exchange for downloading certain apps. These apps, are designed to compromise the security of mobile devices.
To safeguard against such threats, it is important to only install apps from trusted sources like the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
Additionally, users should heed warnings about installing apps from unknown origins.
Banks also advise customers to scrutinise unusual requests, thoroughly research any offers received, and regularly update their antivirus software.
They caution against granting excessive permissions to apps and suggest changing banking passwords immediately if one suspects they have fallen victim to a scam.
This warning is part of a broader effort by banks to combat multiple scams.
Recently, banks alerted customers about the rise of deepfake scams, where cybercriminals use manipulated media to create convincing fake content, potentially leading to financial fraud.
Fake Loans:
Fraudsters offer loans without credit checks they request an administration fee upfront.
This fee payment may compromise online banking details, enabling scammers to add themselves as beneficiaries on the accounts of their victims.
Fake Jobs:
Scammers advertise high-paying jobs on social media, these require an administration fee for application.
Victims unwittingly share banking details, which are then exploited by fraudsters.
Parcel Scams:
Individuals receive messages claiming unpaid fees for parcels awaiting collection.
Banks advise against clicking links in such messages. Do not share banking information. Banks recommend direct contact with courier companies instead.
Phone Call Impersonation:
Scammers impersonate acquaintances in distress, aiming to extract personal or financial information.
Banks urge the public to verify the identity of the caller through alternate means before sharing any details.
Inheritance Scams:
Messages suggesting unexpected inheritances are typical scams that require recipients to divulge personal details.
Customers are advised to ignore such messages and block the sender.
Fake Celebrity Endorsements:
Scammers exploit the following of celebrity personalities and use their names to promote fraudulent schemes, such as cryptocurrency investments.
Scepticism is advised towards unsolicited messages, especially those requesting financial transactions.
Banks underscore the importance of staying informed and cautious in the face of evolving scams,
they urge customers to report suspicious activities promptly - to mitigate risks.
