Kidnappings associated with hijackings have become a significant concern in South Africa.
Recent statistics indicate that out of 17,061 reported kidnapping cases in the 2023/2024 fiscal year,
44% occurred during hijackings, underscoring the gravity of this issue.
Regarding crimes against children, 11,240 children were reported as victims of select contact crimes in the 2023/2024 fiscal year. However, this figure encompasses various offences and does not specify the number of kidnappings
or those linked explicitly to hijackings.
Renowned for his expertise in safety and security in South Africa, Mr. Mike Bolhuis is
frequently consulted for his in-depth insights and strategic guidance.
Please read the following article for his insights:
PREVENTATIVE MEASURES WHEN TRAVELLING WITH CHILDREN:
Never leave your child unattended in a vehicle.
Keep child locks engaged to prevent car doors from being opened from the inside by criminals.
Place your child behind the front passenger seat.
This positioning allows for quicker access to your child in emergencies.
Parents with two or more children should begin by unbuckling the child closest to you, then proceed to the other side for the second child.
If they are old enough, encourage them to remain calm and unbuckle their own belts for a quicker exit.
Teach children how to unbuckle seatbelts and operate door locks.
Regular drills can ensure they respond promptly during emergencies.
Steer clear of known crime hotspots, especially during late hours.
ENHANCING SITUATIONAL AWARENESS NEAR HOMES, STOP SIGNS AND OTHER INTERSECTIONS:
Avoid routine routes, as criminals often observe victims before attacking.
Avoid distractions like mobile devices when approaching your residence or intersections.
Maintain a gap between your vehicle and others at stop signs or traffic lights to allow for quick evasive actions if necessary.
Be vigilant for unfamiliar individuals or vehicles in your neighbourhood.
EFFECTIVENESS OF TRACKING DEVICES AND PANIC BUTTONS:
Installing vehicle tracking devices can aid in the swift recovery of stolen vehicles.
Panic buttons can alert security services during emergencies, facilitating rapid responses.
SELF-DEFENSE AND DE-ESCALATION STRATEGIES:
Remain calm and composed to prevent escalating the situation.
Follow the hijacker's instructions without resistance to minimise risk.
Inform hijackers about your child's presence and request permission to remove them safely.
THE ROLE OF TECHNOLOGY IN PREVENTION AND RESPONSE:
Dash cams can record incidents, providing valuable evidence for law enforcement.
Vehicle tracking systems enable real-time monitoring, increasing the likelihood of vehicle recovery.
Some mobile applications allow users to share real-time locations with trusted contacts, enhancing personal safety.
Implementing these measures can significantly enhance the safety of both drivers and their children,
reducing the risks associated with hijackings and kidnappings.
WHAT TO DO IF YOUR VEHICLE HAS BEEN HIJACKED WITH YOUR CHILD INSIDE:
STAY AS CALM AS POSSIBLE:
Panic can cloud judgment.
Remember, most hijackers want the car, not the child.
COMMUNICATE WITH THE HIJACKERS:
If possible, calmly tell them, “Please, my child is in the car. Let me take them out.”
If they refuse to let you remove the child, comply to avoid escalating the situation.
OBSERVE AND REMEMBER KEY DETAILS:
The direction of the escape.
Vehicle description - try to remember the make, model, colour, and any identifying features like dents or stickers of your own car and the car of the hijackers if another car has been used.
Try to remember the hijacker's appearance, clothing, accents, and any weapons used.
CALL FOR HELP IMMEDIATELY:
Contact the SAPS (South African Police Service) – 10111
Report it as a “Child in Danger” situation to prioritise the response.
Alert your security provider (if you have a tracking system or panic button).
Use vehicle tracking services if your car is fitted with one.
Call Mr. Mike Bolhuis of Specialised Security Services for immediate action.
NOTIFY COMMUNITY AND SOCIAL NETWORKS:
Use WhatsApp community safety groups, neighbourhood watch, or social media to spread awareness quickly.
Provide accurate descriptions but avoid sharing unverified information that could mislead efforts.
AVOID CHASING THE HIJACKERS:
Do not attempt to follow them – this can put you and your child in further danger.
Leave the pursuit to the police and private security services.
WORK CLOSELY WITH AUTHORITIES:
Provide all details to law enforcement to help track the vehicle.
Stay at the crime scene if safe, or relocate to a police station as advised.
PREPARE FOR EMOTIONAL SUPPORT:
Once your child has been recovered, they may need counselling or emotional support after the traumatic experience.
Seek professional help if needed.
