The "Interlinx" scam on WhatsApp is a phishing attack where scammers aim to deceive individuals
into revealing sensitive personal information, such as bank account details or passwords.
MODUS OPERANDI:
THE PHISHING MESSAGE:
You may receive a WhatsApp message from an unfamiliar number or one that appears to come from a legitimate company, such as Interlinx or a similar entity.
URGENCY AND PRESSURE:
The message typically creates a sense of urgency, claiming an issue with your account or asking you to verify your identity urgently.
REQUEST FOR PERSONAL INFORMATION:
The scammer may ask for a "security pin" or other confidential details, including bank information or login credentials.
WHY IT IS A SCAM:
LEGITIMATE COMPANIES DO NOT REQUEST SENSITIVE INFORMATION VIA WHATSAPP:
Reputable businesses will never ask you to share sensitive details like passwords, PINs, or financial information over WhatsApp or other messaging platforms.
THE URGENCY TACTIC:
Scammers often use high-pressure tactics, making you believe immediate action is required.
This is designed to prevent you from thinking critically about the message's legitimacy.
THE GOAL:
The ultimate aim of the scammer is to collect your personal information, which they can then use for fraudulent activities like identity theft, unauthorised transactions, or selling your data.
HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF:
NEVER SHARE PERSONAL INFORMATION:
If you receive a message asking for your security pin, bank account details, or password, it is likely a scam.
Legitimate companies do not request such information over WhatsApp or other messaging apps.
STAY CALM WITH URGENT REQUESTS:
If you get an urgent message from an unknown sender, take a moment to pause and think.
Scammers often rely on the pressure of urgency to trick you into making quick, rash decisions.
VERIFY THE SENDER:
If the message seems suspicious, do not reply directly to it.
Instead, verify the sender's identity through official channels, such as contacting the company directly via their verified customer service number or official website.
USE STRONG PASSWORD:
Ensure all your online accounts have strong, unique passwords that are difficult to guess.
Avoid using shared or easily guessable passwords.
ENABLE TWO-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION:
This adds an extra layer of security, ensuring that even if your password is compromised, the attacker will not easily gain access to your accounts.
BE CAREFUL WITH LINKS AND ATTACHMENTS:
Do not click on links or open attachments from unknown senders, as they may lead to malicious websites or download harmful software onto your device.
ADDITIONAL SAFETY MEASURES:
REPORT SUSPICIOUS MESSAGES:
If you receive a message you believe to be part of this scam, report it to WhatsApp immediately.
You can block the sender and report the incident via the app to prevent further communication.
STAY INFORMED:
Scammers constantly evolve their tactics.
Keep yourself updated about the latest scams and share information with friends and
family, especially those who may not be as familiar with online threats.
CONTACT AUTHORITIES:
If you have fallen victim to this scam and shared sensitive information, report it to local authorities or your bank as soon as possible to minimise the risk of further harm.
Like many others, the "Interlinx" WhatsApp scam relies on deception and urgency to trick individuals
into sharing sensitive information. By remaining vigilant, verifying the legitimacy of requests,
and following the security measures
outlined above, you can protect yourself from falling victim to this scam.
Remember that no legitimate company will ever ask you for your private
information over WhatsApp or similar platforms.
