PROJECT: GENERAL HOME SAFETY MEASURES WHEN AWAY ON HOLIDAY

YOU MAY SHARE THIS PUBLIC DOCUMENT

Specialised Security Services continues to forewarn the public about dangerous situations before

each pending school holiday and we endeavour to educate on practical measures to safeguard citizens.

Keep your private residence safe while on holiday. It is crucial to protect your property and

belongings from theft or damage.

Read our latest projects posted regarding this:

GENERAL SAFETY MEASURES:

  • Lighting:

  • Use timers or smart lighting systems to simulate occupancy while you are away.

  • Set lights to turn on and off at different times throughout the day to create the illusion that someone is home.

  • Motion-activated outdoor lights can also help deter intruders by illuminating dark areas around your home.

  • Neighbourhood Watch:

  • Inform trusted neighbours or members of a neighbourhood watch program that you will be away and ask them to monitor your property.

  • They can report any suspicious activity to the authorities and may also be willing to collect your mail or newspapers to prevent them from piling up and signalling your absence.

  • Mail and Deliveries:

  • Stop mail and newspaper deliveries or arrange for a trusted neighbour or friend to collect them for you.

  • Accumulating mail or packages can indicate that no one is home, making your property a burglar target.

  • Social Media Caution:

  • Avoid posting about your holiday plans or sharing photos of your trip on social media until after you return home.

  • Broadcasting your absence online can alert potential burglars that your home is unoccupied.

  • Secure Valuables:

  • Store valuable items such as jewellery, electronics, and important documents in a secure safe or lockbox.

  • Consider storing high-value items off-site or in a bank safety deposit box while away.

  • Home Maintenance:

  • Ensure your home appears well-maintained from the outside to avoid signalling that it is unoccupied.

  • Arrange for lawn care and other maintenance tasks to be taken care of in your absence.

  • Emergency Contacts:

  • Provide trusted friends, family members, or neighbours with a spare key and emergency contact information if they need to access your home in an emergency.

  • Securing your Perimeter:

  • Use a combination of technological and traditional security measures.

  • An electric fence or wall can serve as a strong deterrent, and if it is a wall, reinforcing it with barbed wire or spikes on top will prevent easy access for burglars.

  • Installing CCTV cameras will ensure visibility around your home, and employing smart technologies for remote monitoring will enhance security and increase your home's value significantly.

  • When it comes to the gate, potential weaknesses include lifting and forcing the gate rack away from the gate.

  • To prevent these, secure the gate with anti-lift brackets and weld a flat bar onto the rack.

  • Additionally, connect your intercom system to your smartphone to stay informed about any activity at the gate, and use modern gate remotes to prevent unauthorised access.

  • For windows, it is crucial to install robust burglar bars outside the windows for added security, even if they may not be visually appealing.

  • Main doors should be made of strong material and reinforced with multi-point locks for added protection.

  • Dogs are highly effective security measures as they act as deterrents and provide an early warning system.

  • Research has shown that alarms and security sensors are among the most effective burglar repellents, so it is essential to have them installed by a reputable armed response company and to conduct regular tests and maintenance.

  • Lastly, screening your workers for criminal records is crucial, including domestic workers and gardeners, to prevent potential inside information from being used by criminals to target your home.

KNOW YOUR ENEMY:

  • Make sure to educate yourself about how burglars operate.

  • If possible, seek advice from the local police station.

  • Low-level thieves usually target homes with no security.

  • More "professional" burglars tend to operate in groups, are aware of security response times, and typically spend time surveying properties before attempting a burglary.

  • Research shows that burglars target homes based on the following factors:

  • Wealth:

  • Victims were targeted because the burglars knew there would be valuables in the house.

  • Inside information:

  • Burglars prefer to target homes where information has been provided.

  • Proximity:

  • Burglars prefer to target homes within 10 to 30 minutes of driving distance.

  • Low security:

  • Homes with substandard security were naturally a target.
