Specialised Security Services handles numerous cases involving unsuspecting individuals who fall
victim to data breaches, scams, and identity theft.
Mr Mike Bolhuis, a specialist investigator in serious violent crime, economic crime, and cybercrime,
is committed to educating the public, emphasising that crime prevention should be a priority
of each citizen and a shared responsibility.
A "fake CAPTCHA" is a deceptive online element that mimics a legitimate CAPTCHA
(Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart)
it is used to trick users into providing personal information or downloading malware by appearing
to be a standard verification process while actually being a malicious attempt to steal data or compromise a system; essentially, it is a phishing tactic that uses the familiar CAPTCHA format to gain trust and deceive users.
HOW FAKE CAPTCHA WORKS:
When one goes to a website that looks legitimate, a CAPTCHA will pop up and will ask you to click the “I’m not a robot” box.
As soon as you click the box, instructions will appear, explaining what the user needs to do to "access" this website or download an application.
Verification steps:
Press Windows Button + R.
Press CTRL + V.
Press Enter.
Click the “Verify” button below to finish (This will only come up when you do not have admin privileges).

As soon as you do this, your computer will be infected.
Malware will have been downloaded onto your computer within a minute.
It will immediately start stealing your data: passwords, usernames, bank account details, emails, cookies, cryptocurrency wallet, etc.
Windows Defender does not stop this malware from being downloaded.
The malware has a string of code bypassing Windows Defender.
90% of users that fall for this social engineering tactic use their personal computers with admin privileges.
This Lumma Stealer malware runs in the background of your computer without you knowing what is happening.
Once the malware has collected all the information, it is tasked to delete itself from your system.
SIGNS OF FAKE CAPTCHA:
FAKE WEBSITES:
It can be a website that looks real, a CAPTCHA will come up that will ask you to click the "I’m not a robot" box and give you the instructions stated above.
PHISHING EMAILS:
Emails from people or companies you do not know.
Clicking the link takes you to a website you do not recognize with a CAPTCHA box.
Double-check the sender.
Make sure you know who it is and that the address is correct.
Criminals often use slightly different addresses to try to fool you.
ADDS/POP-UPS:
Adds on a website or pop-ups can either immediately ask you to click the "I’m not a robot" box or will take you to a different website and then ask you to click the box.
HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF:
ONLY USE TRUSTED WEBSITES:
Check the URL for typos or fake domains.
Look for "https://" and watch out for “http://”; also, look for the padlock icon in the address bar, indicating secure websites.
AVOID SUSPICIOUS EMAILS AND POP-UPS:
Do not click on links or download attachments from unknown senders.
Close pop-ups immediately without interacting with them.
Using keyboard shortcuts like Alt + F4 (Windows) or Command + W (Mac) to close suspicious windows.
EDUCATE YOURSELF AND OTHERS:
Stay informed about the latest scams and teach friends, family, and colleagues to recognise and avoid them.
WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU COME ACROSS A FAKE CAPTCHA:
Report the website at The Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).
On Chrome:
On your computer, open Chrome.
At the top right 3 dots, click More.
Click Help > Report an issue.
Leave the website site.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE FALLEN VICTIM TO THIS SOCIAL ENGINEERING TACTIC:
(NOTE! IF YOU ARE NOT COMFORTABLE OR COMPUTER SAVVY, PLEASE TAKE YOUR COMPUTER OR LAPTOP TO YOUR NEAREST COMPUTER REPAIR STORE
AND LET THE PERSON KNOW WHAT YOU WANT THEM TO DO)
Disconnect the computer from the internet.
Change all passwords immediately.
Back up your essential information to an external drive.
Then, factory reset the computer or laptop.
Social engineering tactics happen daily, but with awareness and caution, you can outsmart them.
By recognising the signs, avoiding risky behaviour, and staying informed,
you can protect yourself and your devices from these malicious schemes.
Stay vigilant, stay informed, and do not let scammers exploit your trust.
