The hijacking of eFiling profiles in South Africa is a growing trend in which criminals gain unauthorised access to taxpayers' eFiling accounts. This is done through methods like phishing, SIM swapping, or guessing weak passwords.
Once they have access, they can change banking details to redirect tax refunds to their own accounts or even file fraudulent returns. This type of crime is commonly referred to as eFiling profile hijacking or tax profile hijacking.
PREVENTION:
Use a strong, unique password for your eFiling account.
Never share your login details with anyone, including SARS officials.
Be cautious of phishing emails or messages asking for personal information.
Enable two-factor authentication if available.
Regularly check your eFiling profile for unauthorised changes.
If you suspect your eFiling profile has been compromised, you should immediately report it to SARS through their online query system or by contacting their fraud hotline.
You can also report the incident to the police.
MITIGATING THE RISK:
While there is no foolproof way to guarantee complete protection, you will significantly reduce your risk by taking these proactive steps:
STRONG, UNIQUE PASSWORDS:
Use a complex password that is different from other accounts you have.
Consider a password manager to generate and store passwords securely.
TWO-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION (2FA):
Enable 2FA on your eFiling account if available.
This adds an extra layer of security, like a code sent to your phone, and makes it more difficult for unauthorised access - even if someone has your password.
BEWARE OF PHISHING:
Be extremely cautious of emails, messages, or calls asking for your personal information, especially login details or OTPs.
SARS will never ask for these via email or phone.
REGULARLY MONITOR YOUR ACCOUNT:
Log in to your eFiling account frequently to check for suspicious activity, like changes in your banking details or addresses.
SECURE YOUR DEVICES:
Keep your computer and phone protected with antivirus software and up-to-date operating systems.
SIM-SWAP AWARENESS:
Be aware of the risks of SIM swapping, in which criminals transfer your phone number to their SIM card.
Consider security measures offered by your mobile provider.
Combine these practices to create a strong defence against eFiling profile hijacking and protect your financial information.
