An alarming number of dangerous TikTok trends have made their way onto the screens of South African users, especially among teenagers and young adults. While many social media challenges are light-hearted and fun, some cross the line into life-threatening territory, encouraging risky behaviour, criminal acts, and unsafe medical practices. These trends have already resulted in serious injuries, hospitalisations, and deaths globally. Parents, educators, and the public must stay informed about these viral challenges, understand the real risks they pose, and actively warn young people against participating in them.

  • JUMP AND TRIP PRANK:

    • Also known as the "Skull Breaker Challenge," this dangerous trend involves two individuals tricking a third person into jumping, only to kick their legs out from under them mid-air.

    • This can result in severe injuries, including concussions, spinal damage, and fatalities.

    • Despite TikTok's efforts to ban such content, the prank has resurfaced under different names, exposing more teenagers to its risks.

  • "OATZEMPIC" DIET TREND:

    • This trend promotes an oat-and-water-based smoothie, dubbed "Oatzempic," as a quick weight-loss solution.

    • Named after the prescription drug Ozempic, which supports weight loss in individuals with type 2 diabetes, Oatzempic has no scientific backing and does not replicate Ozempic’s hormonal effects.

    • Experts warn that such fad diets can cause nutrient deficiencies, health complications, and contribute to body image issues or disordered eating, especially among teens.

  • "SKINNYTOK" AND EXTREME THINNESS PROMOTION:

    • "SkinnyTok" is a controversial trend on TikTok that promotes extreme thinness and its detrimental effects on mental health, particularly among young users.

    • Mental health experts warn that such content can lead to disordered eating and body image issues.

  • "GLASS FRUIT" (TANGHULU) CHALLENGE:

    • This trend involves creating homemade tanghulu, a street food made by dipping fruit in molten sugar.

    • The recipe often involves melting sugar in the microwave to extremely high temperatures, which can pose dangers when the hot mixture is handled recklessly.

    • Experts warn that the high heat capacity and sticky nature of sugar can lead to severe burns.

    • If children attempt this trend unsupervised, the risk of burns from hot sugar splashing or being ingested is significant.

  • OUTLET CHALLENGE:

    • This involves partially inserting a phone charger into an outlet and then sliding a penny down the wall onto the exposed prongs, which can cause sparks, electrical damage, and potential fires.

    • This trend poses serious risks of electrocution and property damage.

  • BENADRYL CHALLENGE:

    • This encourages users to take large doses of the antihistamine diphenhydramine (Benadryl) to induce hallucinations.

    • This can lead to seizures, heart problems, and death.

    • Medical professionals strongly advise against participating in this trend.

  • BLACKOUT CHALLENGE:

    • This dangerous trend challenges users to hold their breath or choke themselves until they pass out, aiming to experience a brief euphoric high.

    • It has resulted in numerous injuries and fatalities worldwide.

  • FIRE CHALLENGE:

    • Participants apply flammable liquids to their bodies and set themselves on fire, attempting to extinguish the flames quickly.

    • This has led to severe burns and hospitalisations.

  • EYE CHALLENGE:

    • This trend involves using high-powered lasers or bright lights to temporarily change eye colour.

    • It poses significant risks to vision and can cause permanent damage to the eyes.

  • CHA CHA SLIDE CHALLENGE:

    • Drivers film themselves performing dance moves from the "Cha Cha Slide" song while driving, taking their hands off the wheel and their eyes off the road, which can lead to dangerous driving conditions and potential accidents.

While TikTok has removed over 900,000 videos in South Africa for guideline violations, including many related to these dangerous trends, it is crucial for parents, educators, and young users to remain vigilant.

Open communication about the risks of such challenges and promoting safe online behaviour

will help prevent injuries and save lives.
