PROJECT: CATFISH EXPOSED! LUVETTE LABUSCHAGNE

YOU MAY SHARE THIS PUBLIC DOCUMENT

Recently, the SSS Cybercrime Investigation Unit tackled a particularly unsettling case involving the victim in this case,

Mrs Angie van der Merwe, wife of the esteemed Blue Bulls rugby player Akker van der Merwe.

Mrs van der Merwe became the target of a malicious catfishing scheme. An individual operating under the fake online persona "Chane Labuschagne" used her identity and photos to build deceptive online relationships and conversations.

This caused significant emotional distress and threatened Mrs van der Merwe's reputation and even safety.

Recognising the severity of the situation, she reached out to Specialised Security Services for help.

Our cybercrime investigators dove headfirst into the case, sifting through digital footprints

and utilising innovative investigative techniques. This relentless pursuit led us to an individual named

Luvette Labuschagne, a 29-year-old resident of Reynfield, Benoni, as the individual behind the fake profile.

Here is a glimpse into some of the critical pieces of evidence that solidified our case:

  • Device and Phone Number Match:

    • We discovered that Luvette used the same cell phone number and device associated with the catfish persona, "Chane Labuschagne."

    • This crucial link provided an undeniable connection between Luvette and the deceptive online activity.

    • The device used at the time of investigation was confirmed to be a Huawei P30 Lite.

  • Social Manipulation and Covert Operations:

    • Ms Luvette Labuschagne was under the impression that she was talking to an old acquaintance while using her real name.

    • She was manipulated into providing her actual address and location, and this was later confirmed to be correct using additional investigative techniques.

  • Physical Location Verified:

    • Corroborating the digital evidence, we confirmed Luvette's address in Reynfield Benoni, further solidifying the connection to the catfishing scheme.

  • Photographic Evidence:

    • Through manipulative techniques, Luvette Labuschagne provided the team with a selfie.

    • We analysed the photos provided, revealing their metadata, which confirmed they were taken at the time of submission, directly linking her to the fraudulent activities.

    • This undisputable evidence left no room for doubt.

    • The metadata also provided location information.

  • The Catfish admits:

    • Direct communication with Luvette Labuschagne led to her unknowingly confessing her true identity, confirming her involvement in creating the fake online profile impersonating Mrs van der Merwe.

SOME OF THE FAKE PROFILES USED BY LUVETTE LABUSCHAGNE:

Perhaps even more disturbing was the escalation of Luvette's behaviour. Initially captivated by the persona

Luvette presented online, another individual (whose identity we withhold for security purposes) attempted to meet

her several times. However, she repeatedly cancelled or simply never showed up. Once he finally cut off communication,

her behaviour became obsessive. Luvette began posting his photos online, portraying them as a couple despite never

having met. This chilling turn of events highlights the potential for online deception to spiral into real-world harassment.

Through this investigation, Specialised Security Services successfully exposed Luvette Labuschagne as the perpetrator

behind the malicious catfishing scheme. This case serves as a reminder of the potential dangers hidden within the

online world and the importance of safeguarding online identities.
