PROJECT: ADVICE FOR SOLO FEMALE TRAVELLERS

YOU MAY SHARE THIS PUBLIC DOCUMENT

While solo travel is an empowering experience, safety should always be a top priority.

SSS focuses in this project on the safety of women who are unfortunately seen as easy prey.

Please read our latest travel safety projects:

  • Keep your solo status private:

    • Travelling alone offers excellent opportunities to meet new people, but it is essential not to disclose that you are alone, especially to strangers.

    • Give the impression that you are part of a group if asked.

    • Trust your instincts and share your solo status only when it feels safe, such as with fellow travellers on tour, but not with taxi drivers or random individuals.

  • Familiarise yourself with the area:

    • Once you have checked into your accommodation, take a brief walk around the vicinity to get a feel for your surroundings.

    • This will help you assess the area’s safety and prepare for any night-time outings.

  • Choose safe, well-reviewed accommodations:

    • Your choice of accommodation plays a crucial role in your safety.

    • Opt for hotels with solid reviews, suitable security measures, and a reputable track record.

    • Discreetly handle room information during check-in and avoid announcing your room number.

  • Location is key:

    • Stay at accommodations located near main attractions, business districts, or malls to ensure easy access to transport and essential services.

    • Check-in during daylight hours whenever possible and use hotels that offer self-check-in options for added convenience.

  • Establish local support:

    • Before your trip, ask friends or family if they know anyone in your destination city.

    • A local contact can provide valuable insights about safe places to visit and someone to turn to in an emergency.

  • Stay connected:

    • Keep your phone charged and have your emergency contacts readily accessible.

    • Consider carrying a portable charger or power bank to ensure you are always reachable.

  • Use reputable transport options:

    • When travelling solo, avoid unmarked taxis and opt for transportation services with solid reviews, especially if arriving late at night. Inquire about hotel shuttle services or use well-known ride-hailing apps to ensure safe and reliable rides.

  • Secure your valuables:

    • Use the hotel’s safe to store important documents, electronics, jewellery, and extra cash.

    • Do not wear expensive jewellery or brand travel accessories when you travel.

  • Practice extra safety measures:

    • Load your bank card onto your phone for seamless transactions.

    • Double-check that all doors and windows are locked when you settle in.

    • Exercise caution when opening your door—always confirm the person’s identity before allowing anyone in, using the peephole if available.

    • Avoid social media to advertise that you are travelling alone, and rather share your experiences after your trip.

    • Share your daily travels and location with a trusted family member or friend.

    • Avoid travelling at night.

    • Women travelling solo should always have a financial backup plan in case of lost or stolen bank cards.

    • It is advisable to carry certified copies of your identity document, passport, and visa.

    • Notify your medical aid of travel plans and keep their contact details easily accessible in emergencies.

    • Store these copies separately from your belongings, such as in a secure location at your hotel.

    • Additionally, have a copy of your prescription medication with you, and ensure you are aware of any medication restrictions at customs checkpoints in the countries you are visiting.

    • Avoid travelling with items that could be mistaken for illegal substances, such as washing powder or other suspicious-looking items.

While the thrill of exploring new places solo is exciting, it’s important to stay vigilant.

Solo travel is about empowerment, but that empowerment comes with ensuring your safety is never compromised.
